Off Road NZ’s History

Off Road NZ was established in 1992 by Diane and Graham Foote, out of their love for both the outdoors and off road driving. The idea stemmed from Diane and Graham wanting to better utilize their dry stock farm block, based on the Mamaku plateau.

Diane and Graham went on to pioneer several ‘first in New Zealand’ adventure products for the free independent traveler and the convention and incentive market, including the Monster 4X4 Thrill Ride and the 4WD Bush Safari.

With a lot of determination, vision and trial and error, the NZ 4WD based business developed into a profitable, sustainable company, based on the principle “Enjoy It, Don’t Destroy It”.

Off Road NZ in Rotorua went on to win several awards, including the Best Visitor Related Business and Supreme Award Winner in the Rotorua Business of the Year Awards in the year 2000.

The Tew Family
The Tew family arrived in New Zealand on 27 April 2001, to start a new life in Rotorua. Ian, Carol and their two boys, Matthew and Gregory, came from a farm in Oxfordshire, England. Being used to the great outdoors and enjoying most sports, the family wanted to live somewhere with plenty of action!

Earlier that year the Tew family was on holiday in New Zealand and Ian and Carol saw that Off Road NZ was advertised for sale. The family viewed and experienced the Rotorua adventure attraction a couple of times before being the successful bidder when it was finally sold at auction.

Improvements and Additions
Ian and Carol took the challenge of exploiting the unlimited potential this award-winning business had and:
  • Improved and enlarged the main reception and offices
  • Established a dedicated claybird shooting range
  • Developed a new and improved lake
  • Expanded and landscaped the ‘Bush Camp’ Catering Venue
  • Introduced a second Monster 4X4 to the fleet
  • Introduced more Rotorua team building challenges
  • Become Qualmark registered
  • Initiated a planting program to replace non-native trees and plants with indigenous species

The Introduction of Raceline Karting
In July 2010, Ian and Carol opened a new experience for their guests – Raceline Karting.
The new track is New Zealand’s newest and longest A-rated outdoor kartsport circuit and provides guests with an opportunity to experience kart racing in a safe and controlled environment. Groups can experience the buzz and adrenaline of KartSport from the driver’s seat of a state-of-the-art, 4-stroke 390cc Sodi kart, imported from France, exclusively for Off Road NZ.

The launch of Raceline Karting in Rotorua was made possible due to Off Road NZ’s unique relationship with the Rotorua Kartsport Development Trust. The KartSport Development Trust, whose patron is international motor racing champion Greg Murphy, has developed the Rotorua International Kartsport Raceway. When the trust isn’t running national and international meets, Off Road NZ will have access to the track, enabling them to offer the fun and exciting sport of kart racing to individuals and groups alike.

Off Road NZ director Ian Tew says, “The development of the track has been a labour of love for the many people involved. It was a huge project and its completion is a real credit to the Kartsport Development Trust. Off Road NZ is looking forward to introducing our guests to the sport of karting.”

Alongside the launch of the Raceline Karting Experience, Ian and Carol have:

  • Built and opened a new base and offices
  • Opened a new Monster 4X4 Thrill Ride Track
  • Re-branded Off Road NZ and its unique experiences

Off Road NZ Mission
Boasting the best self drive off road vehicle experience of its type in New Zealand, Off Road NZ continues to provide pulse racing, adrenaline pumping adventure to free independent travellers and corporate clients.

Ian and Carol both believe that New Zealand as a whole has to work together to attract business whether it is new or return visitors. “Let’s work harder on providing a safe, friendly environment that visitors can go away raving about their time in and around this beautiful country”.

“Rotorua is growing and I’m sure it will continue to grow in the future. With this in mind we must ensure that the high level of customer service we provide continues.”

“Rotorua with its accessibility to such natural beauty and its high standard of cultural and adventure attractions make it very hard to match anywhere in the world. We as a family love living here and plan to stay put for a long time yet.”
